Introducing Casey Frankenberger, SVP, Head of Data at Culmination

From “Economical Utilization of Health Information with Learning Healthcare System Data Commons”, 2022

“The ability to inventory institutional data assets, design research studies, and share and analyze data… will lead to untold discoveries.”

Casey Frankenberger, PhD, has joined Culmination as SVP, Head of Data. Casey’s main responsibilities include developing and operational oversight of the Culmination Intelligence Platform and supporting our internal cross-functional team of bioinformaticians and scientists for novel biomarker discovery, diagnostics development, and therapeutic targets.

At Culmination, Dr. Frankenberger is assembling a team to develop the Intelligence platform further.  In his role, he will provide expertise and vision to align our products and platform to our mission - “to discover better health.”

Casey Frankenberger, PhD, speaks about the three-tiered model for data governance and operations.

Part of this will ensure our data platform's governance and security and develop the data assets and operations in a way that enables discovery and empowers collaboration.

Culmination’s Intelligence Platform will support various aspects critical to increasing and expediting innovation for healthcare patients, such as advanced analytics of multimodal data sets, intuitive and immediate cohort discovery, clinical trial design, and feasibility.

Before Culmination, Dr. Frankenberger was the Chief Research Informatics Officer at Rush University Medical Center. He managed a large team of clinical informaticians, data analysts, statisticians, bioinformaticians, and cloud engineers.  While at Rush, he co-led the first native integration of the genomics module into the Epic EHR and helped modernize the clinical research system used for implementing and tracking clinical trials. He was invited to the White House to present his work using AI methods to match patients to clinical trials. Additionally, he was a Microsoft fellow and developed the first Azure-based Gen3 data commons platform to host “the learning healthcare system” data commons project at Rush.

Before Rush, Dr. Frankenberger was the third employee and head of computational biology and clinical translation at Tempus Labs, a Chicago-based unicorn startup that provides NGS and data/analytics solutions at scale for healthcare and life science organizations. While at Tempus, he was a technical director during the lab CAP accreditation process and worked with the commercial team at academic medical centers and with community care providers.

Dr. Frankenberger has also worked in other rapidly growing startups, such as C2i genomics, which raised over $100M, and utilizes WGS to detect cancer recurrence from blood. He was trained at Rush University Medical Center, obtaining a PhD in Biochemistry, and then worked as a postdoc doing computational biology in cancer research at the  University of Chicago.  Earlier in his career, he worked in lab automation for high-throughput genomic applications at the National Cancer Institute.
